Summary
In fall 2002, Basel University’s Institute of Sport and Sport Sciences (ISSW) began a Bachelor’s program to train sport scientists and P.E.s. From fall 2005, this will be joined by a Master’s program. The number of students has already quadrupled in the last two years (160 new students per year).
Together with the new degrees and the related increase of students, the ISSW has initiated measures for lasting enhancement and modernization of teaching with the aid of modern digital media.
Most lecturers teach only part-time, with the bulk of their work outside the university. This makes the coordination of subject contents difficult. In a first step, lecture contents and the learning material of 46 staff were structured and connected by the aid of digital media. By the start of the 2005 winter semester, all these contents will be available to students and lecturers via the Institute’s new internet portal (http://issw.unibas.ch).
This project is intended to impact on “individually driven learning” and “net-working”. With SVC support, the aim is to develop multi-media e-learning modules for different contents in the theory and practice of sport and sport science (examples: motor learning, research methods and methodology, physiology, gymnastics and acrobatics), and to extend the e-learning on offer in the Bachelor’s / Master’s programs. Both to enhance independent learning by the students, and to allow coordination of common or similar subjects in theory and practice.
